At an art workshop in New Mexico we were supposed draw rocks we picked up at the Rio Grande.
I became fascinated with drawing the shadow of my rock.
After a discussion of the Chinese elements (earth, metal, water, air, wood) and their personality correlations I realized that those qualities that I had considered “bad” were just challenges that went along with each of the “good” ones.
I started drawing the rock’s shadows
cast from each of the lights in the room.
They surrounded it.
Balanced it.
I saw it all as circular not linear.
