Quilts & Dolls

RECLAIMED QUILTS I started making quilts with unfinished quilt blocks and yoyo circles from my husband’s Grandmother, Nora Roth Werner (1898-1978) who I'd never met. After that, many people gave me worn or incomplete quilt tops to assemble into wall pieces. I believe this is significant rescue work, to bring women’s work out for all to see and as a way of sharing my stories and experiences.
WHITE QUILT
I rescued my Grandmother’s linen napkins and tablecloths from my mother’s garage sale. I’m saving and treasuring what I hold dear, what remains from someone I loved. The hours I spent beading over the embroidery was a time remembering her life. Carrie Levanger Olander (1894-1953)
SHADOW QUILT
After my 50th birthday, I had an image of a void in my center with a veil of illusion attempting to cover what I feared. The void was rich and deep. The veil inadequate. Facing my shadow and looking at the darker side makes me less fearful. The crazy quilt edges remind me of the chaos of everyday life outside my still center.
MY DEMONS DANCING
When I went to Bali I discovered the importance of acknowledging our demons, so they don’t surprise us with problems. My children had a storybook about the annoying behavior of a mischievous monkey. The elephant never complained because the monkey was teaching him patience! I’m still learning what my demons have to teach me.
GUARDIAN ANGELS
Before our two daughters were born, I had three miscarriages. I've always envisioned them as Guardian Angels looking out for our family. Here they look out for everyone. The center is a small embroidery with Milagros made in Mexico.
GATHERING STILLNESS
My teacher, Dawna Markova, often spoke of her Grandmother. I remember how her Grandmother would describe the necessity of gathering stillness -- to have that quiet “alone time”.  I liked that image.  Gathering Stillness invites you to enter and take a moment gathering your own stillness... If you cannot experience "Gathering Stillness" firsthand, Please take time to gather stillness. Wherever you are.

CHarM Dolls

I started making human figures right after 9-11. I wanted to show how we encompass all things. In a Tokyo Museum I saw a small figure for healing. The English label just said, “Charm Doll.” Since then, I’ve made lots investing them all with a healing mission.
WE ENCOMPASS ALL THINGS
After 9-11 I was disturbed by the us/them, good/bad language & wanted to show how we each encompass all things. This figure was made with a white, peanut shaped head & torso my daughter had made and thrown away. I rescued it and dressed her in layers of garments representing a range of feelings - calm, anger, shadow, protection. As those peel off you discover the figure stands in a false platform made to impress. And inside are the remnants of memories, good and bad.
FAITH, HOPE, CHARITY AND LOVE
Faith, Hope, Charity and Love are protective figures. Each has a cape, a dress and a hat. The hats are made from a set of kitchen scrubbers my daughters gave me for Christmas, specifically as art materials.
ELEMENTAL - Fire
ELEMENTAL - Water
ELEMENTAL - Earth
I remember the fun part of dolls was changing their clothes. Elemental has 3 layers of dresses, fire, water, earth on the sky fabric doll.
